Downtown Peggy is changing perceptions with social media.
Nisha Tuli manages all social media communications for the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ including the award-winning Downtown Peggy program. She tweets, blogs and manages the Facebook page for the beloved cartoon character who has become the positive face of downtown.
Through the use of creative and innovative techniques, Downtown Peggy has amassed a Twitter following of almost 2,000 people and had more than 40,000 visits to her blog in the past year. She celebrates the fun things happening downtown focusing on dining, shopping and entertainment. This increased use of new media has allowed the Downtown BIZ to create connections with the public creating a dialogue on what Winnipeggers want to see for their downtown. It has also allowed them to promote their members, driving traffic to their establishments thereby increasing its effectiveness as an organization.
A recent survey conducted by the BIZ revealed that 34% of Peggy followers now feel more positive about downtown, while 72% were influenced to attend a downtown event and 63% to try a downtown restaurant. Downtown Peggy has put a positive and human face on a downtown often plagued by negative opinions.
